What does UTM mean?
Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) is a map projection system for assigning coordinates to locations on the surface of the Earth. UTM maps the Earth's round surface onto a flat two-dimensional surface.
UTM coordinate system divides the Earth's surface into 60 zones, with each zone corresponding to 6° of longitude. UTM is designed for projecting a 3D sphere (Earth) onto a 2D map.
UTM is commonly used for military, research, and survey applications.
Note:
As the name suggests, the Universal Transverse Mercator projection is based on the cylindrical Transverse Mercator projection.
