What does EGR mean?

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) is an emissions reduction technique used in engines that involves the recirculation of a portion of an engine’s exhaust gas back into the engine. It helps reduce harmful emissions from petrol and diesel engines.
EGR is widely used to control Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) emissions from diesel engines. The higher the combustion temperature, the more harmful nitrogen oxides are produced.
In EGR, the exhaust gas is routed through the EGR valve and mixed back in with the intake air. As a result, less oxygen reaches the cylinders. This process lowers the combustion temperature due to the reduced amount of oxygen, which in turn reduces the amount of NOx formed.
