What does DEMU mean?
Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) or Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) is a multiple-unit train powered by electricity that is generated by onboard diesel engines and generators. DEMU runs on diesel as fuel.
In DEMU, the diesel engine powers an electrical generator or an alternator which produces electrical energy and subsequently feeds the electric motors. DEMU does not require a separate engine or a locomotive, as the diesel engines, generators, and electric motors are all incorporated into the passenger carriages.
