What does Airbnb mean?
Airbnb is an online community marketplace to list, discover and book short-term accommodations around the world. It enables individuals to rent out their house, rooms or apartments to people who are looking for accommodations. The name “Airbnb” is short for Air bed and breakfast.
Airbnb co-founders Joe Gebbia and Brian Chesky started out as two roommates in San Francisco, United States. In order to make their rent, the two loaned out rooms in their apartment to visiting designers for a major Industrial Design Conference when they realized that all nearby hotels were booked up. They bought three air beds (air-mattresses), placed it in their living room and called their new endeavor “Air Bed and Breakfast,” a reference to the air bed their guests were staying on. They turned a traditional Bed & Breakfast into an AirBed & Breakfast. The company was originally known as Airbedandbreakfast and launched on August 2008 under the domain name airbedandbreakfast.com. Later the name of the company is shortened to Airbnb.
