What does VLAN mean?

Virtual Local Area Network or Virtual LAN (VLAN) is a group of network devices that appear to be on the same LAN despite their geographical distribution. VLAN allows a network of computers and users to communicate in a simulated environment as if they exist in a single LAN, which makes them extremely flexible. One of the biggest advantages of VLAN’s is that when a computer is physically moved to another location, it can stay on the same VLAN without any hardware reconfiguration.
