What does TAR mean?
Tar (Tape Archive) is a UNIX utility program that combines multiple files into a single file. The resulting file has a .tar extension. .tar file contains any number of individual files plus information to allow them to be restored to their original form. The Archives that have been created with tar are commonly referred to as tarballs. .tar file is an archive file format and tar.gz is a compressed tar file.
