What does PIR mean?

A Passive Infrared sensor (PIR sensor) is an electronic device which can detect levels of infrared radiation from objects in its field of view. PIRs are basically made of a pyroelectric sensor which can detect levels of infrared radiation. All objects above absolute zero emit energy in the form of radiation and if the body is hotter it emits more radiation. Thus the PIR sensor detects motion by measuring changes in the infrared (heat) levels emitted by surrounding objects. Infrared radiation is invisible to the human eye but can be detected by electronic devices designed for such a purpose. The term passive in this instance means that the PIR device does not emit an infrared beam but passively accepts incoming infrared radiation and “Infra” meaning below our ability to detect.
