An Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) or Overhead Power Ground Wire or Optical Fiber Composite Overhead Ground Wire is a type of cable that is used in the construction of electric power transmission and distribution lines. OPGW is a dual functioning cable performing the duties of a ground wire and also providing a path for the transmission of voice, video or data signals. It is designed to replace traditional static / shield / earth wires on overhead transmission lines with the added benefit of containing optical fibers which can be used for for transmission of data. The fibers are protected from environmental conditions (lightning, short circuit, loading) to ensure reliability and longevity.
