What does PPD mean?
Purified Protein Derivative (PPD) is an antigen used in the diagnosis of Tuberculosis (TB). An antigen is a substance that causes your immune system to produce a specific immune response against it. When the bacteria that cause Tuberculosis come in contact with the antigen, this will create an allergic reaction on the skin where it is injected. The size in millimeters of the swelling at the injection site would indicate whether you have been exposed to Tuberculosis or not.
