What does KDE mean?

K Desktop Environment (KDE) is a free and open source graphical desktop environment for UNIX workstations. The name KDE was intended as a wordplay on the existing Common Desktop Environment, available for Unix systems. The K in KDE was originally suggested to stand for “Kool”, but it was later decided that the K should stand for nothing in particular. Thus the KDE is stands for “K Desktop Environment”.
