What does Canon mean?

Canon is a multinational corporation that specialises in the manufacture of imaging and optical products, including cameras, camcorders etc, headquartered in Ōta, Tokyo, Japan. Canon was originally named Precision Optical Industry. The name ‘Canon’ derived from the name of the company’s first camera, the Kwanon, a prototype for Japan’s first-ever 35 mm camera with a focal plane based shutter. It was named “Kwanon” by Goro Yoshida after Buddhist Goddess of Mercy.
