What does GPS mean?
Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system owned and operated by the United States government. The service is available globally, and is free to anyone with a with a GPS receiver. The United States Department of Defense (USDOD) originally put the satellites into orbit for military use, but later they were made available for civilian use. GPS is a network of orbiting satellites that send precise details of their position in space back to earth. The GPS receivers use this information and trilateration to calculate a user’s exact location.
The GPS receiver measures the distance to each satellite by the amount of time it takes to receive a transmitted signal from each satellite.
