What does ECR mean?
Emigration Check Required (ECR) is stamped on the passports of people who’s educational qualification is below 10th Pass. Holders of ECR passports need a clearance called an Emigration Check from the Government of India’s Protector of Emigrants (PoE) when going to selected countries on a work visa. This is to prevent the exploitation of Indian workers (especially the less-educated and unskilled) when going abroad, particularly to Middle Eastern countries.
